Health and Safety & Manual Handling Training at GO

Updated: May 1

On Monday and Wednesday, GO Team members and Trainees participated in additional training sessions in our designated Training Zone.

A refresher for some - this week's training focused on Health and Safety, which also covered aspects of proper manual handling.

Health and safety training is essential for any workplace, irrespective of the industry. Organisations are responsible for ensuring a safe working environment where risks are minimised and employee health is prioritised. Unfortunately, many companies underestimate the significance of health and safety training programs. These training programs are crucial for every organisation and benefit employees and employers.

Understanding Health and Safety Training

Health and safety training consists of programs designed to teach employees how to act safely and protect themselves at work. Our training included emergency procedures, identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, and correctly using personal protective equipment (PPE). For example, at GO, we need to understand how to properly wear helmets and harnesses, while in our Furniture workshop, we must understand how to operate machinery safely. By equipping employees with essential knowledge and skills, organisations can nurture a culture of safety.

Benefits for Employees

One significant benefit of health and safety training is the confidence it instils in employees. When workers know the safety protocols that apply to their jobs, they can respond effectively during emergencies. This training not only saves lives but also minimises injuries. For instance, a study from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that workplaces that employ regular safety training experience a 20 to 40 percent reduction in lost-time due to injuries.

Additionally, employees who receive comprehensive health and safety training are more likely to follow regulations and guidelines, leading to fewer workplace accidents.

Benefits for Employers

For employers, investing in health and safety training brings significant advantages. Firstly, businesses that prioritise employee safety often enjoy lower insurance costs. Insurance providers frequently offer reduced premiums to companies that commit to reducing workplace hazards through well-structured training programs. For example, a manufacturing firm implementing regular safety training may see its general liability insurance rate drop by up to 25 percent.

Moreover, a workplace with a robust safety culture can enhance its reputation and attract employees.

Compliance with Regulations

In Guernsey, we follow most common UK guidelines, and numerous regulations require businesses to provide safety training to employees.

Complying with legal standards is another crucial reason for understanding health and safety training. Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines, lawsuits, or, in extreme cases, forced shutdowns. Keeping training up to date helps companies stay compliant and empowers employees to understand their rights and responsibilities related to safety.

Fostering a Safety Culture

Developing a culture that emphasises health and safety daily results in long-term benefits. This culture encourages open communication about safety concerns, prompting employees to engage in safety initiatives actively. By organising regular training sessions, organisations create a platform for employees to voice concerns and collaborate on solutions. For example, a workplace safety committee can be formed, allowing employees to contribute to safety strategies, ultimately leading to a safer environment.

Summing It Up

Health and safety training is more than just a regulatory requirement; it is a fundamental practice that promotes a secure and productive work environment. By investing in thorough health and safety training programs, employers show their commitment to their employees and advance a safety culture. The rewards extend beyond mere compliance; they result in higher employee satisfaction, lower costs, and improved overall organisational performance.

With a proactive approach to health and safety, companies can create a supportive environment for their employees and ensure everyone returns home safely and soundly daily.
